Hitch/Unhitch Procedures
This exercise may be done at Start or End of Test
When you get out of the vehicle stop the engine close the door.
Uncoupling the Trailor

Apply the trailer hand brake.

Disconnect lights and stow the cable safely.

Lower jockey wheel.

Wind jockey wheel down to raise trailer drawbar while holding handle of coupling up to release from ball.

Lastly and Very Importantly. Disconnect breakaway cable.

Advise Examiner you have removed the Number plate.

Drive the car forward and reverse alongside the trailer.

Leave a gap of about 5 feet.

Coupling the Trailor
Checks to carry out before reversing up to trailer:

Check trailer handbrake is on & working. (Is handle up? If you push the trailer does it move?)

Check all doors, sides, etc. are secure.

Check wheels and tyres. (Are the wheel nuts tight? Are the tyres inflated and in good condition? Kick tyres)

Check all reflectors and light lenses are fitted and in good condition.

Reverse the car towards the trailer stop approx. 2 metres short with the ball of the car in line with the trailer coupling

Check the height of the trailer coupling is above the ball of the towing vehicle.

Reverse back again and stop again about 1/2 metre away Final Check.

Position under the coupling.

Connect breakaway cable to a fixed part of the towing vehicle. (Avoid just looping it over the ball).

Wind jockey wheel up to lower trailer drawbar while holding handle of coupling up to allow it to attach to the ball.

Check the coupling is correctly engaged by winding the jockey wheel down and raising trailer drawbar and rear of towing vehicle (If only the trailer lifts, the coupling has not engaged correctly).

Wind jockey wheel up, raise and secure. Use any device to prevent jockey wheel unwinding during transit. (lock in place).

Connect lights.

Release trailer handbrake. Advise Examiner Number plate has been replaced.

Ask the Examiner to Help Check the lights are working - while you operate the controls (close car door and look at Examiner in the door mirror).

Check indicators individually - make sure the trailer is indicating the same way as the towing vehicle.
